Global Learning Academy

Design influences for the new Global Learning Academy elementary school include incorporation of the latest technology, the adoption of the sustainability in the built environment, and the creation of a sense of place within an urban setting. The school, which serves 800 students Pre-K through 5th grade, replaces three older, small schools in the neighborhood. The design concept was to place the new campus within a wooded, heavily sloped, mature landscape, yet reflect the nearby downtown urban neighborhood through organizing elements such as “Main Street,” a central corridor that leads to each grade’s wing of classrooms. Teaching signage is placed throughout the building to inform the students about the materials, fixtures, and equipment chosen to save energy, improve air quality and promote conservation. This project is certified LEED Gold.
