Spearman Center
The Spearman Center is an office and retail center located at the pie-shaped intersection of Barrancas and Main Streets at the western entrance to downtown Pensacola. This site is the former location of the Spearman Brewery Company, which was in operation from 1935 to 1964 in this industrial section of Pensacola. The design for the new center recalls the warehouse district vernacular with solid masonry walls and large window openings, resembling the office wing to the original Spearman Brewery facility. The architectural form follows the pointed shape intersection where the two streets meet and it projects a 60 degree point to the street corner, emphasizing the trapezoidal shaped site. The building offers a strong urban street presence with its brick façade that is pushed toward Main Street in a turn-of-the-century fashion, verses today’s typical commercial development that sets buildings behind vast parking lots. Architectural features include brick detailing, glass panels that separate entire building forms, and a “notch” carved out of the western edge to create an interesting focus. Understated elegance is achieved with simple forms and window openings reminiscent of historic warehouse district type buildings. The building is now occupied by various tenants, including a law office, an architect’s office, and medical offices.
